Switching from coffee to cacao can be a game-changer for your health and well-being. Let's dive into the magical world of cacao and explore why it's worth making the switch.
First and foremost, cacao is a powerhouse of nutrients. It is rich in antioxidants, which help fight off free radicals and protect your cells from damage. These antioxidants can have a positive impact on your overall health, including reducing inflammation and supporting a healthy heart. According to scientific evidence, cacao is the richest antioxidant plant and has also been scientifically proven to increase the good bacteria in our digestive system. It also increases the blood flow to the brain, creating more mental agility, awareness and focus.
Cacao contains the essential minerals: iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, chromium, potassium, manganese, calcium and selenium. Cacao is the main source of magnesium in nature, with magnesium considered to be one of the least abundant elements in the current human diet. Magnesium is essential for maintaining healthy muscle and nerve function, as well as supporting a good night's sleep. So, if you struggle with muscle cramps or have trouble winding down at night, cacao might just be the answer you've been searching for.
One of the primary physical benefits of cacao is its ability to boost energy and improve cognitive function and focus. Cacao can be just as energising as coffee but in a gentler way as it contains a different natural stimulant. While coffee contains caffeine, cacao is high in the alkaloid theobromine; a natural stimulant that provides a gentle and sustained energy boost without the jitters or crash that coffee can sometimes bring. This means you can enjoy a cup of cacao and feel energised throughout the day without the rollercoaster ride of caffeine.
Raw cacao is rich in a phytonutrient known as a flavonol. Flavonols have been shown in numerous studies to improve blood flow to the brain. When you improve blood flow, and therefore oxygen to the brain, researchers have seen significant improvements in mental focus and attention span. These nutrients have also been shown to help lower blood pressure and aid in preventing blood clots.
Cacao is a powerful plant medicine and has many amazing, life-affirming qualities that support health and psychological well-being. Cacao is known to enhance mood and promote feelings of well-being. It contains compounds like phenylethylamine (PEA) and anandamide, which are often referred to as "feel-good" chemicals. These compounds can increase feelings of happiness and even act as natural antidepressants. So, if you're looking for a mood boost, cacao is your new best friend.
Cacao doesn't just positively improve your mood in the short term, though. The compounds found in cacao, like anandamide, can actively help to keep mental illnesses like anxiety and depression at bay. Cacao also contains some other compounds with potential biological activity. These are biogenic amines such as serotonin, tryptophan, phenylethylamine, tyrosine, tryptamine and tyramine.
Tryptophan is an amino acid that gets turned into the neurotransmitter serotonin and then converted into the hormone melatonin. Serotonin is known as the “happy chemical” and raw cacao boosts the body's natural production of it, increasing our mood and ability to fend off stress.
Now, let's talk about taste. Cacao has a rich and indulgent flavour that can satisfy even the most discerning taste buds. It can be enjoyed in various forms, such as hot chocolate, smoothies, or even as a delicious addition to baked goods. So, say goodbye to bitter coffee and hello to the velvety goodness of cacao.
What are the benefits of drinking cacao everyday
While cacao offers many benefits, it's important to choose high-quality, organic cacao to reap the full rewards. Look for products that are minimally processed and free from additives or sweeteners. And of course, remember to enjoy cacao in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
The difference between regular cacao and ceremonial grade cacao is the way it has been processed and prepared. For ceremonial cacao, the processing is kept as minimal and pure as possible. Freshly harvested beans are fermented and then dried, but never roasted.
Ceremonial cacao can certainly feel energising but wont tend to make you feel jittery or keep you up at night. Because of the way the theobromine significantly increases blood flow, you will likely experience a heart-opening sensation after drinking cacao. In addition to its physical and mental health benefits, ceremonial grade cacao is also a powerful tool for spiritual growth and connection.
The cacao spirit connects with the energy of the divine feminine (mamma Cacao) and acts as a conduit to communication with spirit guidance. By drinking cacao in a cacao ceremony, you can open your heart and connect with your higher self. In traditional indigenous ceremonies, cacao is often used as a way to connect with the spirit world and induce a state of mindfulness and relaxation.
It is believed to open the heart and bring about a sense of inner peace and connection to the present moment. Many people who have incorporated ceremonial grade cacao into their spiritual practices have reported feeling more grounded, present, and connected to their higher selves.
Morning Gratitude and Ceremonial Prayer
“I give thanks to the heart of the Fire. I give thanks to the heart of the Water. I give thanks to everyone who brought this cacao to me. I give thanks to my own heart for showing up and being open to receiving the messages I'm meant to receive.”
Ceremonial grade cacao offers the richest nutrient content of all - meaning more antioxidizing and anti-inflammatory polyphenols, more brain-boosting theobromine, and more bliss-inducing anandamide It helps the body to heal, detoxify and to give your immune system a good boost. The experience of a cacao ceremony can also assist in energetic healing and gaining clarity in the areas of love, purpose, intuitive abilities, career and personal growth.
Cacao is very powerful on the central nervous system and consuming large quantities can interfere with calcium retention. The amount of Cacao one consumes is important to observe. When having Cacao every day, a creative or meditation dose is more than enough. We recommend having ceremonial doses no more than 3 times per week, especially when beginning to drink Cacao ceremonially. Don't consume more than 50 grams or 2 oz of raw cacao a day.
You can experiment with different ways to prepare your Cacao by adding herbs, plant based milks and natural sweeteners like Manuka honey. Simply add hot water to your Cacao to form a paste and add your favourite ingredients.
After you have broken your block of Cacao, store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve its freshness. A dry cupboard or kitchen pantry is perfect! It's not recommended to store Ceremonial Cacao in the fridge because the high moisture may cause moulding.
So, why not give cacao a try and experience the wonders it can bring to your life? Swap your coffee for a cup of cacao and embrace the delicious, energising, and mood-enhancing benefits that await you. Your taste buds and your body will thank you.

Precautions: Cacao is contraindicated with antidepressants, especially MAOIs and some SSRIs. This means that it's a bad idea to take Ceremonial Cacao if you're using antidepressants. At best, you're going to get a stinking headache. At worst, you'll develop serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
